Rank is players over the last seven days. A big server showing offline while the rest are up is that server restarting or wiping, not Rust being down.
The verdict, then the numbers
Our verdict comes from one reading of the full server list, taken every five minutes. We compare what we see with the count that is normal for this hour on a normal day. Warm evenings are busier than Tuesday mornings, so the hour matters.
The verdict covers Rust as a whole. It does not promise that any one server is reachable.
Big servers, one by one
The busiest servers are worth watching apart from the crowd. In an outage they fall together. When only one is quiet, that server is the story, not Rust.
Counts that fall across the whole list point at Steam or at Facepunch. A single empty row points at that server's own restart or wipe. Its page keeps the last time we saw it. The full server list sorts by players, so you can find yours.
Reading the 48-hour lines
The charts on this page draw two days of history, hour by hour. A dip at the same time each night is the normal rhythm. A drop with no matching rise on the other side is not.
Force wipe is a scheduled exception. On the first Thursday of the month, servers go quiet for a short while as they update. Our wipe countdown tells you when the next one lands.
If the numbers here say Rust is up and your server browser shows nothing, the fault is usually closer to you. Start with Steam, then your filters.

Are Rust servers down right now?
The answer at the top of this page is live. It compares the current server reading with the count that is usual for this hour. Rust servers are up as of the last refresh, with 92,452 players across 11,842 servers.
How is the Rust server status worked out?
We read the whole public server list every five minutes and set the total against the figure this hour has produced on ordinary days. Roughly 85 per cent of that figure or more means servers are up. Under half means an outage. Between the two, the readings are lower than normal but not gone.
My server list is empty but this page says servers are up. What do I do?
Treat it as a local problem. Restart Steam first, since Rust takes its server list from Steam. Then loosen the region and tag filters in the browser, and turn off any VPN. On a force wipe day, update Rust to the current build before trying again.
One server has vanished from the list. Is Rust down?
Not by our reading, unless the totals here have dropped too. A single missing server is most often restarting, updating or wiping. Open its page for the last time we saw it, or check the servers wiping today.
